Thiago Alcantara: A Transfer Update.

One of the most intriguing transfer stories in this transfer window has surrounded the future of Thiago Alcantara. Around the start of the return to football in Germany at the end of May, Thiago looked certain to sign a new contract at Bayern Munich. In the words of the club “We thought he was ready to sign, everything was agreed”. However something at the 11th hour changed the mind of the player, prompting Bayern to brief the media saying “The player has informed us he would like to try something new”.

Since that point, there’s been an assumption that “The something new” meant that he would be leaving the German Champions to join the English Champions, Liverpool. There has been multiple stories throughout the summer claiming that Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp has spoken to Thiago to convince him to join. There has even been claims that Thiago has agreed personal terms with Liverpool and all that’s left is for Liverpool to agree a €30 million fee with Bayern.

Whilst this may be the case, it’s become common knowledge that Manchester United hold a strong interest in the player also. Some sources have even suggested that United have no problem meeting Bayern Munich’s valuation for the player but the sticking point for them has been the players “High wage demands”.

Three weeks left of the transfer window remains, Thiago is still a Bayern player with Liverpool seemingly struggling to put together a package for a player 29 years old that would upset the wage structure at the club. Reputable journalists have suggested that before Liverpool could sign Thiago, they would need to sell someone like Giorginio Wijnaldum. However indications are that Wijnaldum will be staying, despite interest from Barcelona.

On Saturday, Twitter went in to a bit of a storm and United fans started to get excited, when a number of journalists and so called “In the know (ITK)” accounts were suggesting that United “Were closer than ever to signing Thiago”.

Today former the former Bayern Munich President, Uli Hoeness has suggested that Thiago has probably agreed personal terms with both Liverpool and Manchester United and it will down to the player to make a decision once a bid is accepted by Bayern. However the german club may have to wait a while for a bid, because Hoeness also suggested that both English clubs may be waiting until later in the window to see if Bayern Munich’s asking price may decrease.

This has certainly become a saga and personally I was convinced Thiago would join Liverpool at the start of the window. I thought United’s name was only been mentioned to drive up the price or speed up negotiations as has been the case many times before. However, as time goes on it looks like any deal with Liverpool for the Spanish midfielder is looking less and less likely and it might just be United who could sign a player they first showed an interest in seven years ago. It will be interesting if these stories that are surfacing are firmed up by some of the more mainstream media over the next couple of days. One thing is for sure whoever signs Thiago this summer may have the best signing of summer and it could definitely be one to watch right up until deadline day.
