Luton Town vs Manchester United Player Ratings

Manchester United booked their spot for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Nevertheless, it was far from a convincing victory considering how bad United were in the first half before Brandon Williams won the penalty late on. Juan Mata proved faultless from the spot and in the second half both Rashford and Greenwood finished off the game after the manager brought them on to kill the game.

Player Ratings:

Dean Henderson – 8:  Much more vocal than David De Gea and better distribution as well. Finally, Manchester United fans saw a keeper who can make a save at the near post as well as he made a superb save to prevent Tom Lockyer’s header.

Aaron Wan Bissaka – 5: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer egged the England right-back to attack a few times as he looked comfortable sitting behind. He was pretty inactive defensively and rarely targeted by Luton Town players.  Needs to be reminded that he isn’t at Crystal Palace anymore.

Eric Bailly -7:  Solid performance by the injury-prone defender but still showed flashes of poor positioning. He caught out a couple of times but his pace and quick movement is a huge asset for Harry Maguire.

Harry Maguire -5:   Remains a big problem for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and particularly targeted by Danny Hylton due to his lack of pace. Was superb in winning headers but not the best performance showcased by the United Captain.

Brandon Williams -5:  Erratic in position, conceded stupid fouls, and rightfully booked for some cheap fouls as well. Won the penalty in the first half due to his stronger right foot but still not a convincing performance.

Fred-8:  Neat and tidy on the ball and shows why he needs to be kept ahead of many players.  Good performance in the first appearance of the season.

Nemanja Matic -7:  Probably, the nucleus of United’s team and showed his class and experience.  Brilliant in narrow and tight spaces but ball distribution could have been better to break down Luton’s defensive block.

Donny Van De Beek – 8:  Never wasted a touch or an opportunity to trouble Luton defenders. Unlucky to not get the assist for Juan Mata’s effort but was selfless and showed his intelligence time and again. Great first start for Manchester United.

Juan Mata was faultless from the spot

Juan Mata- 7:  Juan Mata remains the only player in team who has scored in every season post Sir Alex Ferguson. Neat penalty to take the lead in the first half. Played a game of precision and class vs Luton but nothing beyond that.

Jesse Lingard -6:  Absolutely ran his lungs out and won the balls but lack of quality in final third was clearly visible. Had a good linkup play between Donny and Mata but overall, still a performance which was below par.

Odion Ighalo -4: One of the most disastrous displays by the Nigerian. Couldn’t hold the ball, couldn’t pass nor got into dangerous positions.

Bruno Fernandes -7:   Showed his class by almost setting a goal up and coming close to scoring one. Played the important role in buildup of the second.

Marcus Rashford -7:  Clean, Crisp and a net finish by the England International to wrap up the game

Mason Greenwood -7: Scored a good goal in dying minutes which would do world of good for the golden boy from Manchester.
