Paris Saint-Germain sporting director, Leonardo Araujo told a French newspaper Thiago Silva and Edinson Cavani are to leave the club with the France Ligue 1 season concluded after being initially suspended due to the novel COVID-19 outbreak.
PSG decided to offload their club captain, Thiago Silva, 35, and record goalscorer Edinson Cavani this summer, Araujo revealed. A French Newspaper report quoted Leonardo as saying their stays at the club were “coming to an end”.
It was a very difficult decision to make,” Leonardo said. “These are players who have made an impact on the history of the club: we always wonder whether we should continue a long way together or whether it is not better to avoid one year too many. The stories were especially beautiful. But, yes, we are coming to the end. We had to make a logical decision, even economically or with regard to the generation that is coming up.”
Maybe we’re wrong, I don’t know; there’s never a perfect time. Now the Champions League is still in our targets and the idea is to keep going in the competition with them until the end of August. But the way in which we can do this isn’t clear.”
It is not clear if Thiago Silva and Cavani will continue with PSG in their quest to win the UEFA Champions League but it was made pretty clear that they’d be leaving as free agents. So the question remains, should Manchester United make a move for Thiago Silva and Cavani?
Cavani and Thiago Silva would be great addition to the Manchester United young squad and would their experience will come in handy. Cavani, 33, record goalscorer for PSG amassed a total of 138 goals in 200 league appearances in his brilliant spell with the PSG side. Odion Ighalo, who’s been the back-up striker for Manchester United this season so far under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will probably not see his loan spell beyond January, 2021 and Cavani will be a great addition to the squad if Manchester United or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are in for a striker in the summer. The Uruguayan, who won the Copa America with Uruguay in 2011 has scored 50 times in 116 appearances for his National team. He’s a brilliant striker, no doubt but we’d hope Ole Gunnar Solskjaer consider him as an option, especially if he expresses an interest in joining United.
Thiago Silva, who will turn 36 in September this year will be leaving PSG alongside Cavani. Rumour has it that Arsenal are looking to lure the 35 year old to join the Emirates. United would leave many fans wondering if it was the right decision if they’re to make a move for Thiago Silva. He’s a great defender, no doubt but with his age and with the intensity of the Premier League, it wouldn’t be one Ole would consider to the United board, especially with the wages he’d want. United defensively have done great job this season compared to last season. Manchester United captain, Harry Maguire has brought stability to the defence with his partnership with Victor Lindelof and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
