Manchester United vs Wolves Preview

Manchester United will be desperate to get a big result and a big three points at home to Wolves. Following back to back defeats for the first time in the Premier League since the opening two games, United have to win tomorrow. Losing sends a big message that their fourth place spot that seemed so comfortable a few weeks ago is now up for grabs. Liverpool could move into their spot should United fail to win against Wolves tomorrow and so it is paramount they win.

Wolves are now mathematically safe following their Midlands derby victory over Aston Villa and have no threat to their season but remain a tough side for United to face. However, their away record is painfully bad with just two away wins all season and none in the last six. All the omens point in United’s favour, especially their excellent home record. But they have to take advantage. Here’s all you need to know:

Manchester United Team News vs Wolves

Manchester United welcome back Raphael Varane and Alejandro Garnacho as both are likely to be in contention for tomorrow’s game. Varane has been missing since the 2-2 draw with Sevilla while Garnacho returned to the bench as an unused substitute last time out. However, the big news is Marcus Rashford is set to miss the game with a leg injury. Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he is “a big question mark” for tomorrow and is unlikely to feature. Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay and Lisandro Martinez remain out.

Interesting Facts:

  • Manchester United have only lost one in the last nine against Wolves however that was the last home game against them in January 2022.
  • There has neither been more than three goals scored nor more than a one goal margin victory in a match between Manchester United and Wolves since March 2012.
  • Of the available players set to play tomorrow, only Anthony Elanga and Anthony Martial have previously scored against Wolves.

Predicted XI:

With the way Wolves play, United need to field Wan-Bissaka to stop Pedro Neto and I think Luke Shaw has to move out to left back for this one. Diego Costa will be a brutal physical prescence while Cunha will drive at players. My personal choice would be Maguire and Varane but I expect Ten Hag will field Lindelof over the club captain and Costa will take advantage.

In midfield, Casemiro will probably start along with Christian Eriksen to add some control at Old Trafford while Fernandes and Antony are guaranteed to start. Up front, I hope and pray Martial starts because Weghorst offered absolutely nothing again while the left wing should be occupied by Jadon Sancho without Rashford. Garnacho should come on and add an impact in the second half.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Lindelof, Shaw; Casemiro, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Sancho; Martial

Predicted Score:

I just cannot predict United will make things easy for themselves. They simply fail to do so at the moment. I can see it being a tight and nervy game but United have to score and the crowd will get on them to do so. I’ll go for yet another narrow home win but I hope it will be a convincing win. Especially as I am in the crowd!!

Predicted Score: United to win 1-0
