Manchester United vs Aston Villa Preview

Manchester United will be desperate for three points as they host Aston Villa on Sunday. United have now gone three games in a row without winning in a full 90. The capitulations against Sevilla and Spurs are too recent to not be factored into United’s concerns as they entertain one of the most in-form teams in the League.

Unai Emery’s turnaround with Aston Villa has been nothing short of magnificent. Following three defeats in a row to Leicester, Manchester City and Arsenal, Aston Villa are now on a 10 game unbeaten run with 8 wins and 2 draws. A rise from relegation candidates to another European dream is on the cards. Win against Manchester United and they are only three points off the top four.

Manchester United will of course be expected to win this match but it will be tough against Aston Villa. They blew Newcastle away, were clinical in their smash-and-grab against Chelsea and have been consistently getting results. United with their injuries will be concerned but have everything it takes to secure the win. Here’s all you need to know:

Manchester United and Aston Villa Match Information:

Teams: Manchester United and Aston Villa
Date: Sunday 30th April 2023
KO Time: 14:00 BST
Location: Old Trafford
Managers: Erik ten Hag and Unai Emery
Referee: Jarred Gillett

Team News:

Manchester United are likely to be without Harry Maguire for a third game running. Maguire was suspended for the Semi-Final against Brighton but sustained a chest injury in training which forced him out of the squad against Spurs and is likely to see him miss the match against Villa. Implying that United will likely field the same back four on Sunday.

Alejandro Garnacho signed a new deal until 2028 and returned to training this week. The game may come to soon for the Argentine but he should be involved in the run-in. Varane could be back for the FA Cup Final but is not close to a return right now. He remains sidelined with Lisandro Martinez, Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay and Tom Heaton.

Manchester United vs Aston Villa Interesting Facts:

  • Manchester United have not won a Premier League game against Aston Villa since May 2021 in a 1-3 win at Villa Park. They have won their last match against Villa in a 4-2 win in the Carabao Cup that ultimately saw them lift the trophy.
  • Bruno Fernandes has 8 G/A in 7 games against Aston Villa. However, in his last home game he skied a penalty in stoppage time in a 0-1 defeat.
  • Manchester United have lost just one home game in their last 10 against Aston Villa.
  • Jarred Gillett has only refereed one match for Manchester United so far this season, a 3-0 win at home to Charlton.

Predicted XI:

Based on the team news reports coming in, I expect United will have the same back line as against Spurs. Eriksen ought to start if United have the idea to dominate possession but there is every chance Fred comes in if United fear they will be on the back foot. I expect Erik ten Hag to keep the same midfield but tweak the front three to anticipate a deep line from Villa and counter. I think for this game, Martial starts and Rashford moves out wide with Sancho returning to the bench.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Shaw, Dalot; Casemiro, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial

Predicted Score:

United will hopefully push Villa back and control possession. They have to take their chances and kill games off because they are fragile at the back and the goalkeeper does not prevent chances, goals or crosses with his playing style. Villa will start fiercely but United have run a tight ship at home and I can see them keeping that run going.

United to win 2-0
