Brighton vs Manchester United FA Cup Preview

Manchester United need redemption desperately as they travel to Wembley to face Brighton tomorrow in the FA Cup Semi-Final. Having suffered an embarrassing, lethargic and error-strewn 3-0 loss to Sevilla on Thursday, United have to make things right. However, they are playing against one of the most in-form teams around. Brighton are certainly strong contenders for team of the season with their impressive performances under both Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi. Young stars like Mitoma, Caicedo, Ferguson and MacAllister have ignited this team and made them one to fear.

United will be concerned, especially with their injuries and the collapse against Sevilla. They have to shape up and navigate through this difficult game but that’s easier said than done. This will be a rough one I believe. Here’s all you need to know:

Brighton vs Manchester United Match Information:

Teams: Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United
Date: Sunday 23rd April 2023
KO Time: 16:30 GMT
Location: Wembley Stadium
Managers: Roberto De Zerbi and Erik ten Hag

Manchester United Team News:

Manchester United are guaranteed to be without three, yes THREE centre backs. Martinez and Varane are ruled out through injury, while Harry Maguire is suspended. This indicates that Victor Lindelof will partner Luke Shaw at the back. Tyrell Malacia returned to the squad against Sevilla but was not used. Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford came on at half time but could not have the desired effect. Bruno Fernandes returns from European suspension. McTominay is a doubt and may join Van de Beek and Garnacho on the injury list. Martial is a doubt but was reportedly seen in training today.

Interesting Facts:

  • Manchester United have lost back-to-back games against Brighton conceding 6 and scoring just one. They have not won against Brighton away from home since 2020.
  • Bruno Fernandes has scored four goals and registered two assists in six games against Brighton.
  • Similarly, Danny Welbeck has four goals and one assist in 11 games against United including a winner in the FA Cup for Arsenal!

Predicted XI:

Unfortunately for Manchester United, I expect Erik ten Hag will saddle the team up with David de Gea in goal. Wan-Bissaka HAS to start against Mitoma, he just does. Lindelof and Shaw will be the back two provided any more last minute injuries. Dalot could play LB to deal with Solly March and add some impact in attack and height at the back.

Casemiro, Eriksen and Bruno are likely to start although I would rather Fred for Eriksen as I expect we will not have most of the ball. Rashford needs to start as Sancho was woeful against Sevilla and Antony will aim to stop Estupinian and also continue his good form. We have to hope Martial is fit to play otherwise Sancho will come in and Rashford will move to 9.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Shaw, Dalot; Casemiro, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial

Brighton vs Manchester United Predicted Score:

I just cannot back United to win this. It’s a rarity but I can’t see it. They were battered and awful against Sevilla and so Brighton could tear United to pieces. With little to no defensive cover and the goalkeeper literally gifting goals for fun, this could be a really embarrassing week for the club. I’d love to be wrong but I just can’t see United winning this one.

Brighton to win 3-1
