Manchester United vs Chelsea Preview

Manchester United need just a point to confirm their Champions League status as they host Chelsea in their penultimate game of the season. Following a narrow 1-0 win over Bournemouth and Newcastle’s draw with Leicester, United can beat Chelsea and move to third. It may not mean much in the grand scheme of the Premier League but it may have a significant effect in carrying momentum into next season. Manchester United have Chelsea then Fulham both at home and so with their excellent home form, will expect to win both.

Chelsea have had nothing short of a disastrous season and since Frank Lampard took over as caretaker, they have won just one game and sit TWELFTH in the league. While Thomas Tuchel managed to record wins and Potter’s form was scarcely impressive, Frank Lampard’s team has had relegation worthy form and not had the desired impact. United could deal some pretty heavy damage and wrap up the season with a game to go. A crucial feat so they can rest players ahead of the FA Cup Final next weekend.

Team News

Marcus Rashford missed the away trip to Bournemouth with illness but is back in training an likely to start tomorrow. Scott McTominay made his return to the matchday squad and came on against Bournemouth on Saturday. Tom Heaton is back in training but missed out on the matchday squad to Jack Butland. Lisandro Martinez and Marcel Sabitzer remain out and while Donny van de Beek is readying himself on grass, he is not likely to be part of the squad.

Chelsea, despite their swollen squad are likely to be without 10 players. James, Cucurella, Chilwell, Broja, Kante, Kovacic, Badiashile, Bettinelli, Mount and Felix are all at best doubts. Kalidou Koulibaly returned against Manchester City but was on the bench to Thiago Silva, Fofana and Chalobah.

Interesting Facts:

  • Manchester United have not lost a home game to Chelsea since 2013. They are unbeaten in all competitions in their last 10 games against the Blues (W3 D7).
  • Marcus Rashford has recorded five goals and three assists in 16 games against Chelsea. No one else in the United squad has scored more against them.
  • Should Manchester United avoid defeat tomorrow, they will hit 70+ points for just the third time in the Post-SAF Era (2017/18 and 2020/21). This will also be the highest tally of points a Manchester United manager has recorded in their debut Premier League season.

Manchester United Predicted XI vs Chelsea:

I think Manchester United will start this game as strong as possible to leave no chances to the final day of the season. Wan-Bissaka will start to deny Chelsea any joy down their left with Varane, Lindelof and Shaw also keeping their places. Casemiro and Eriksen will be certain to start as United can assert their dominance and control play against Chelsea. Fernandes will start in the hole with Antony on the right.

Now the last two positions are interesting. I can see United starting Rashford up front and one of Sancho or Garnacho on the wing to have as much pace as possible up front but I think to add a pressing factor to their side, I can see United putting Weghorst up front and Rashford on the left to add energy from the get go and worrying the fragile Chelsea backline.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Lindelof, Shaw; Casemiro, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Weghorst

Predicted Score:

United can start fast and batter Chelsea if they have a similar game plan to the Bridge but ACTUALLY TAKE THEIR CHANCES! It could be a great game to watch as a result and could be one United record a big result in. However, the lack of accuracy in United’s shooting and sloppiness at times in the final third has me expecting a lightly smaller scoreline. Smaller, but comfortable.

United to win 2-0
