Manchester United returned back to the domestic routine on a fashionable note as they defeated Nottingham Forest 3-0 at Old Trafford. First Burnley in the League Cup and yesterday Nottingham as ETH’s reign continues to prove something strong and commendable in this season.
With this win, United remained in the same position in the points table as the other clubs like Tottenham and Newcastle United are doing equally well to keep up the competition high this season.
It was the man with the golden touch these days, Marcus Rashford who scored the opening goal in the first 20 minutes of the game. The credit should actually go to Christian Eriksen whose set-up was fantastic from the corner. Then Rashford’s beautiful finish in the top left corner was simply a joy to watch. He is the top scorer for United so far this season with 10 goals.
United made it two on the counter-attack thanks to Martial. Rashford with the assist and Martial scored from the edge of the box. Two goals in lightning-quick succession for the Red Devils. The built-up started from the United box where Casemiro’s tackle was superb to win the ball from there. Martial would feel that he could be the next replacement for Ronaldo after gaining his confidence back.
The only good chance Forest had in the 1st half was in the 32nd minute where Yates had plenty of time to line up the shot. He hit an effort from distance and De Gea saved it with his chest. Forest found the back of the net just before halftime but was ruled offside. Yates’ header met the boot of Boly who was in an offside position.
2nd half analysis: Manchester United found their 3rd goal in the end stages of the game.
Antony’s effort was denied by Hennessey and the Brazilian felt that he should have scored particularly from that distance. United broke again through Rashford after a magnificent defence-splitting pass by Fernandes. It was another chance wasted by Martial and Manchester United. The Portuguese midfielder slid the ball towards Martial after a wonderful dummy by Malacia. This time it was straight to the legs of the goalkeeper.
Fred joined the party as the substitute scored the third goal for United. It was undoubtedly a beautifully crafted goal which was fed by his countrymate Casemiro. The latter’s interception was spot on and found Fred down the left side of the pitch who made no mistake to settle the deal.
They now face Wolverhampton Wanderers on the last day of 2022 at the Molineux Stadium.
