Manchester United vs Burnley Preview

After a long, long wait, Manchester United are finally back with their Carabai Cup tie against Burnley on Wednesday. United finished in a high before the World Cup with an emphatic and late winner against Fulham. What’s more is that United will return to this matchday with one egotistical, over-dramatic problem (child) resolved. Now it is all about progressing to the next round and with only one of Liverpool or City being United’s big challenger for this trophy. It’s a must-win game against former-City player and now Burnley manager, Vincent Kompany. Here’s all you need to know:

Manchester United and Burnley Team News:

Manchester United

United have a few new injury concerns as they welcome back a host of players from the World Cup. Axel Tuanzebe and Jadon Sancho will not be available neither will World Cup finallists, Lisandro Martinez or Raphael Varane. Diogo Dalot is a doubt due to a hamstring issue.

Casemiro, Fred and Antony all trained today along with the English trio, Maguire, Shaw and Rashford. All of which could feature with Maguire tipped to lead the team out after a fantastic World Cup tournament.

The likes of Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, McTominay, Garnacho, Martial and Elanga have all been with the squad during the World Cup and are likely starters tomorrow.

Burnley

Conor Roberts is suspended and won’t play. Matt Twine is injured after coming off in their win against Middlesbrough. Other than that, Burnley have a fully fit squad.

Interesting Facts:

  • Manchester United have not lost to Burnley since their 2-0 loss at Old Trafford back in 2020. Since that point, they have won three, drawn once and scored 8 goals.
  • Manchester United are yet to keep a clean sheet against Burnley at home since a goalless draw in 2016 under Jose Mourinho.
  • Manchester United have scored in every game that Ronaldo did not start, their only goalless results have come when Ronaldo started the match.

Predicted XI:

I expect Martin Dubravka to have his second outing in a United shirt tomorrow and I would personally like to see it too. Malacia will probably start after a non-existant role for the Netherlands at the World Cup along with Maguire, Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka. McTominay should start in midfield along with Eriksen who exited at the group stages. I think we will have to struggle to watch van de Beek again for United and inevitably be subbed off for Bruno. Garnacho may not start this one with Ten Hag likely to go strong. Rashford, Martial and Elanga are my likely candidates for starters.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Dubravka; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Malacia; McTominay, Eriksen; Elanga, van de Beek; Rashford; Martial

Predicted Score:

I would hope United come away with an emphatic win. But going against a team that are two games ahead of you won’t be easy. We know Burnley’s gameplan and it’s up to the team and manager to prevent it. I will still go for a comfortable scoreline but I think it will be hard work.

United to win 3-0
