Wales vs England Preview

After a not so positive performance against the USA, England can secure top spot in Group B with a win over their domestic rivals, Wales. For Wales, it is a must-win game regardless as they have to hope Iran and the USA draw to ensure their qualification to the knockout round of the World Cup – a result that would also secure England’s top spot due to their superior goal difference. However, top spot should be the aim for England as it does pave the way for an easier (in theory) RO16 tie.

England will want the win for security but there’s also the thought of resting players for the latter stages which they are all but guaranteed to be in. Wales will come out flying knowing they have to score and score plenty and that could work into England’s hands. Here’s all you need to know:

England and Wales Team News:

Wales:

Robert Page has been coy about dropping an anonymous Aaron Ramsay especially with the need for pace against England’s back line. Wayne Hennessey will miss the game due to his red card and so Danny Ward will start. Joe Allen was at fault for the Iran opener but could come into a weak Welsh midfield.

England:

England could have James Maddison in the squad as he has missed the last two games due to injury bit is now back in training. Walker is fit but Ben White is out due to illness. Henderson, Foden and Rashford could all make their first starts of the tournament.

Last time England played Wales at an international tournament, they came from 1-0 down to beat Wales courtesy of goals from Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge.

Predicted XIs:

Wales (5-2-3): Ward; Roberts, Mepham, Rodon, Davies, N. Williams; Ampadu, Allen; James, Bale, Moore

England (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Henderson; Rashford, Mount, Foden; Kane

Predicted Score:

I expect England to stamp out the remaining sparks of the Welsh dream. They are winless in seven and I don’t expect that to change. England can beat them in possession and on the counter. It could be brutal. Wales just miss the quality they need to get through and England will hopefully have the reaction they have against the USA.

England to win 3-0
