Could Nkunku be Ten Hag’s first statement signing

Manchester United are set for the biggest overhaul this summer and Christopher Nkunku looks like he could be the big name signing, who makes the switch to Old Trafford. It is reported that United will submit their first official offer to Leipzig next week, although it is likely that this initial bid will be rejected. So let’s take a look at what the Frenchman could bring to Ten Hag’s side.

Versatility

One of Nkunku’s most valuable assets is his versatility. The 24-year-old can play as an attacking midfielder and anywhere across the frontline. He can also play in central midfield, however he is most effective when he is further up the pitch.

The dynamic forward has all the attributes of a modern-day forward, which is something that this current United side lacks. Ralf Rangnick has already said that he believes the Red Devils should buy two modern forwards, who could play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. The new Austria manager is a big fan of Nkunku and could play a role in bringing him to Manchester.

Ten Hag has made it clear that Ronaldo will be a crucial part of his plans. However, with the Portuguese international in the team, the Reds lack in the pressing department. The arrival of Nkunku could ease these demands on Ronaldo, as Leipzig are known for their intense pressing and therefore this is an area where Nkunku will flourish.

The Frenchman would add to the depth of the United frontline, which will look depleted when forwards Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial leave the club. Consequently, this means Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford would have greater competition for their places. Nkunku could even challenge Ronaldo for the starting number nine role.

Nkunku’s numbers in Germany

Leipzig’s talisman had an excellent 2021/22 campaign. Nkunku got himself 55 goal contributions in 51 games. The playmaker played a significant role in Leipzig’s Europa League campaign, helping his side reach the semi-finals. He was equally as impressive in the Bundesliga, getting his side to fourth in the league.

In Germany, Nkunku is know for his aggression and pace. On many occasions this season, Nkunku would get in behind, causing the opposition defence all kinds of problems. When operating as a number nine, the French international was very clinical and almost always found the back of the net. Amazingly, he was just as influential in big games.

Nkunku grabbed a hat-trick in against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. Pep Guardiola’s side simply could not cope with his pace and direct approach. It is very rare that you see this City side let an opposition player run riot.

Will United pay the premium for Nkunku

Although, Nkunku could be the perfect signing for United, there are always questions marks over the transfer fee. Leipzig are likely to demand over £60m and the Red Devils are known for haggling over fees. However, the Reds are right to be cautious about overspending on a player, who thrives in a different league.

Players such as Timo Werner and Hwang Hee-Chan have struggled to transition to Premier League life, after impressing in Germany. In the Bundesliga, attackers have more space to operate in the final third and this is completely different in the Premier League. Despite this, both Rangnick and Ten Hag seem to agree that Nkunku would be the perfect addition for the team and therefore it is likely that United do pursuit the player.
