Crystal Palace vs Manchester United: Match Analysis

Manchester United ended the season with another shocking defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. It was certainly a delightful day for the Crystal Palace fans as they got to witness their team hold their own against the Red Devils.

Wilfried Zaha netted the only goal of the game at Selhurst Park. Despite the result, the Reds secured Europa League football with a sixth-placed finish as Erik ten Hag watched from the stands ahead of his official unveiling. What’s most damning about the result is the fact away fans were singing your not fit to wear the shirt.

Manchester United lacklustre in first half

United started the encounter on the front foot. On the eight minute Bruno played in Cavani whose deflected shot fell to Hannibal. Unfortunately, Hannibal was offside from the deflected shot.

Shortly before the 15th minute, Cavani had a chance after Bruno Fernandes deflected shot fell kindly in his path. Cavani’s shot took a deflection of Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen before being palmed away by the Crystal Palace goalkeeper Guaita who was wrong footed.

As the half wore on Edinson Cavani found Elanga who went on a lung busting run. When was Elanga was baring down on goal he tried to thread a ball across goal . Unfortunately, Bruno Fernandes could not quite divert the ball across goal into the net at the far post.

Zaha went past Dalot before shooting across De Gea’s goal. Soon afterwards, De Gea made a smart save down quickly to his left to deny Zaha. Moments later, Edouard and Schlupp combined well before Schlupp’s shot was denied by the feet of De Gea.

Soon afterwards, Palace scored when Wilfred Zaha turned Dalot and deceived Lindelof before picking out the bottom corner. Dalot should have been goal side for the goal. Moreover, in the build up Bruno played a stray pass to Dalot which lead to him getting turned. At half time it was Palace 1-0 United.

Manchester United improve in 2nd Half

At the start of the second period, Bruno Fernandes’s free kick while on target was not able to beat the keeper. Moments later, Joel Ward’s brilliantly timed tackle denied Hannibal who found himself in a one-on-one. Palace had a chance of their own shortly afterwards when Zaha dragged a shot wide of the post.

In the final 30 minutes Hannibal forced the Palace goal keeper (Guaita) to tip over the bar after being set up by Fred. Moments later, Andersen almost headed into his own goal for Palace after a good floating delivery from Mata. McTominay then headed straight into the Palace keepers hands from the resulting corner. McTominay was on his own at the back post as there was no Palace player near him.

Inside the final 10 minutes, there was a chance for Manchester United when Elanga flashed a ball across the the six yard box. In added time McTominay shoot high and wide meaning United had to settle for defeat as the curtain came down on the campaign.

This is Crystal Palace’s first win against Manchester United at Selhurst Park in the Premier League. It also reinforces the idea Man United have had a awful season,  one that looked bright in the first five games but a disastrous collapse that ultimately cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job.
