Rumours have been circling around De Gea leaving United and the deal was nearly successful in securing a move to Real Madrid in 2015. However, he remains loyal to the club as United’s No.1 goalkeeper and is due his testimonial. Henderson was a contributing factor helping the Blades secure promotion in the premier league for the first time since 2007. Now he’s back at the Theatre of Dreams to fight for the No.1 jersey.
In May 2016, Manchester United appointed Jose Mourinho as manager. During his 3 years at Utd he won the Community Shield, League Cup and the UEFA Europa League. In the same season the United goalkeeper’s form was on the decline and it hasn’t been as crucial ever since. The game against Sevilla results in a 2-1 defeat to United knocking them out of the Champions League after Ben Yedder netted 2 goals. His second came as De Gea attempted to hit Yedder’s header over the bar and instead hit it into his own net.
Obviously, De Gea is United’s first choice Goalkeeper depending on his fitness and will be in the starting 11. In all competitions during the 2018/19 campaign he has 47 appearances and conceded 63 goals which as a player of his ability isn’t acceptable. Nevertheless, De Gea was not the culprit for United’s failing in form as the entire defence was faulty.
United sacked Mourinho after 2 and a half years in charge. Allegedly, the club stated: “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at United and to wish him the success in his future” Therefore resulting in Solskjaer being appointed as caretaker manager.
Henderson in 2018/19
This was a season that many Sheffield United fans will remember for years as it is the return to the Premier League after 12 year absence. There was only one alternative that could prevent promotion for the blades… Leeds wining! but unfortunately for Leeds the finishing result against Villa was a 1-1 draw.
Their captain Chris Sharp says: “I’m so thankful for to the gaffer and grateful for this. To be captain is unbelievable. The gaffer’s the best manager in the clubs history, the fans will definitely agree with me -two promotions in three seasons to get us back in the Premier League.
“The lads have been absolutely superb and its because the gaffer’s driven us on every single day, even if he does our head in at times.”
Henderson starts in net for the games against Ipswich town and keeps a clean sheet in the 2-0 win. Remarkably, Henderson earned himself with an assist. He hit a long ball to Mark Duffy who then proceeded to score in their 4-1 win against Aston Villa. His contributions to the team lead him to be awarded with the Sheffield United Young Player of the Year award along with the Community Player of the Year award. Hense allowing him to challenge for the goalkeeper jersey.
Goalkeeper analysis 19/20 season.
The 19/20 campaign is a thrilling season full with much excitement and anxiety as United were and still are a team difficult to predict. Starting the season United are victorious over Chelsea in a 4-0 win. It was a match that De Gea was the hero. 39 minutes into the game De Gea produces a save to deny Barkley by closing him down and sticking his leg out to block the shot keeping United with the lead going into half time, again De Gea’s class is showing as Emerson takes the shot across the goal as De Gea dives and punches the ball away.
Although De Gea is a crucial member of the United team many people have had doubts regarding his performance. Neville states: “his performance levels have dipped and I’d be worried about his inconsistency. His credentials are still among the best in the world but at the moment he has lost all his confidence.”
Henderson made 36 appearances for Sheffield United and kept 13 clean sheets but their impressive record stretches further than that resulting in 31 clean sheets which only Liverpool and Leeds have beaten. This season Sheffield United finish the League in 9th position. Despite De Gea making more saves per game than Henderson he is still conceding more goals per game.
As the 20/21 approaches games come quicker than they end with the FA cup, EFL cup, UEFA cup and Henderson has matches to show his development. However, talks about goalkeeping issue has not affected De Gea’s confidence as he told the PA news: “No I trust in myself, I showed my qualities all the years so I keep available for the manager, and I always ready to play and help the team as always.”
Having De Gea could benefit Henderson’s development to become a top goalkeeper and learn what it takes to play for a top club as he trains with De Gea day in day out. De Gea is 30 years old and still has many years ahead of him and deserves to leave United harmoniously with the natural progression of Henderson. De Gea has achieved great things at the club and there is no doubt that he will be a legend. Henderson should remain at Manchester United if he’s satisfied with being a number 2. United should provide De Gea with one last big contract for his loyalty to the club and allow him to go back home to Spain if he wishes too.
