Istanbul Basaksehir vs Manchester United Preview

Istanbul Basaksehir vs Manchester United

It has been one step forward and two steps back for Manchester United recently. Sunday’s defeat against Arsenal in the league snapped a four-game unbeaten run. The focus now switches to the back to the Champions League on Wednesday evening against Istanbul Basaksehir.

United has begun with two wins in Group H of the competition. We are six points better off than our opponents who have lost their opening games. The superb start began with the 2-1 away win at PSG followed by the fantastic 5-0 win against RB Leipzig. This was our best performance so far in games this season.

We are looking to win the first three games of the Champions League for a ninth time. No other team has failed to qualify for the knockouts after securing nine points from nine.

Whilst we have looked great in Europe, our form in the Premier League remains inconsistent. The 1-0 defeat to Arsenal has seen not win in any of four league games at Old Trafford. Ole Gunnar Solskjær admitted after the game that United failed turned up. Our poor display costed us with Arsenal taking full advantage.

Stats show that 7 points from the first six league games has only happened once before which was under David Moyes during the 2013-14 season. A response is needed midweek to alleviate the pressure and takes some confidence going into the away game against Everton on Saturday.

Opposition Preview

Istanbul Basaksehir has yet to gain any points in the Champions League group stages losing 2-0 to both RB Leipzig and PSG respectively. They are currently seventh in Turkish Super Lig with a 2-1 win at Konyaspor at the weekend.

This will be the second English team that Istanbul Basaksehir has ever faced previously playing against Burnley in a Europa League qualifier in the 2018/19 season, which they lost 1-0.

Manchester United Team News

It is likely that Solskjær will rotate the side ahead of Saturday’s fixture against Everton. It could see Dean Henderson come in for David De Gea for his first start in the Champions League.

Edinson Cavani who’s made three substitute appearances could be an option on the front line. Axel Tuanzebe who’s impressive display against PSG could see him feature in the centre of the defence.

There has been constant talk over which is United’s best midfield recently and more so after the Arsenal game. Nemanja Matic and Donny van de Beek who came on as substitutes might feature in this game from the start.

United is currently without Eric Bailly who is on the sidelines with a muscle injury. Jesse Lingard is stepping up his recovery from his knock. Left-back Alex Telles will not feature after testing positive for covid-19

Pre-Match Press Conference

The pre-match press conference saw Harry Maguire asked why our form has been so good in the Champions League and not in the Premier League. He said, “It’s not something we can put our finger on. We take each game as it comes, we don’t look if it’s a Champions League game or a Premier League game. We try to win the game – that’s our motivation every game we play in. Our Premier League results haven’t been as successful, but we have the same preparation. We’re focused on tomorrow night’s game, which is in the Champions League, and hopefully we can put in a performance like we’ve shown we can do this year in the competition.

Ole was asked how United fans should be feeling having experienced some highs and lows over the last couple of months. He said, “We work every single day for our fans to have something to celebrate, of course. The process we’re going through…the players are working really hard; they’re very focused. Hopefully, tomorrow night, we can stamp our authority on this group and start with three straight wins, which we’re working towards now.

United will look to secure two wins in two against Istanbul Basaksehir and progress into the knockout stages. Ole said, “Well, we’ve started very well with the first two games and two great results. Now we’ve got a chance to get three against a difficult side. They’ve done well both against Paris and Leipzig, so we know it’s going to be a difficult match. We know we have a chance if we play to our best; we hope to get those four to six points that we need. Now it’s about getting those three points tomorrow night.

Istanbul Basaksehir Team News

For our opponents, they will be without former Tottenham player Nacer Chadli who is yet to make his debut for the club due to injury. Captain Mahmut Tekdemir is a doubt for the game having missed the previous two.

Junior Caicara is out indefinitely after rupturing his Achilles tendon. Forward Enzo Crivelli is unlikely to feature after picking up an injury during the league win against Konyaspor on the weekend.

Istanbul Basaksehir vs Manchester United Prediction

United will look to respond after the disappointing defeat to Arsenal and this will be the perfect fixture to start to build the momentum again. Even though our opponents have yet to win in the group stages, we must be wary of the threat they pose.

Our form against Turkish sides recently has not been great and are not wanting to suffer another defeat. The players will need to step in the next few weeks as we look to build confidence back within the side.

Predicted Score: Istanbul Basaksehir 0-2 Manchester United
