Will Manchester United Rue Missing Out On Upamecano?

For a few years now, United have been looking for a solid defensive partnership at the back. In hopes of seeing the Vidic-Ferdinand glory days again.

Manchester United currently have 6 centre-backs. However, OGS only considers Harry Maguire to be reliant enough. Lindelöf and Bailly are rotated based on form and injuries. Axel Tuanzebe is showing promise and might go on to become United’s future captain. But right now he needs to make sure he stays fit to play as often as the manager wants him to.

Manchester United’s search to get that perfect defensive pairing sorted is still ongoing …

Over the last few months, one name that has been consistently linked with United is Dayot Upamecano.

The 22-year-old French centre-back, who plays for the German team RB Leipzig. Upamecano is a strong ball-playing defender. On his day, he makes defending looks ridiculously easy. He is comfortable on the ball and in the air as well.

Did United miss out on buying a world-class centre-back during the last transfer window? Is Upamecano that answer?

Upamecano gets a United Trial:

United welcomed RB Leipzig in the Champions League last week. A lot of eyes were on Upamecano and how this was his chance to shine. A solid performance in front of his potential employers would have been great for the 22-year-old’s prospects.

Upamecano was good in possession to help Leipzig push towards the United half. Did quite a job to spread the play wide.

This was before Marcus Rashford came on. Rashford had other ideas. Especially for his second goal, Rashford was too quick for Upamecano and left him behind.

United went on to comfortably win 5-0.

The Verdict:

Upamecano still is a good defender and is only 22 years old. He has a bright future ahead of him. Upamecano would be a good addition if United decide to go for him next summer. However, with the current set of defenders United have, they may think twice now.

But will United rue missing out on him during the last transfer window – Maybe NOT.  Upamecano is good but he needs time to become exceptional.

If nothing else this match might help United be in a better bargaining position next window. To help bring down the transfer fee or the £38m release clause which kicks in from 2021.
