Angel Gomes made his first ever senior appearance for Manchester United coming on for Wayne Rooney in the final league match of the 2016/17 season in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, becoming the youngest ever player to play for Manchester United in the Premier League. He made is FA Cup debut on 26 January 2018, coming on as an 88th-minute substitute for Marcus Rashford in a 4–0 victory against Yeovil Town in the Fourth Round and scored his first senior goal on 25 July 2019, in a 2–1 pre-season friendly win against Spurs.
If we consider his Manchester United academy career and the accolades he has achieved there is much to admire from the young starlet and Gomes has revealed he wants to stay at the club despite reports linking him with a summer move to rivals Chelsea or even to Catalan giants, Barcelona. Gomes is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to agree a new deal at Old Trafford despite being highly rated inside the club. With his deal set to expire, Chelsea and Barcelona are reportedly ready to try and tempt him with an offer, but he insists he still sees his future at Old Trafford. Angel Gomes has stated he would like to remain with the Red Devils and win trophies with the club he joined as an academy scholar ahead of the 2016–17 season, and on 27 August 2016, he became the youngest player to score a hat-trick for Manchester United at academy level since 2001, despite starting the game on the bench. He also became the third youngest player to achieve the feat in the club’s history at 15 years, 362 days.
Gomes’ preferred position is as a central attacking midfielder. His playing style has been compared to that of Ronaldinho due to his creativity, composure and dribbling. In January 2015, Nani described Gomes as Manchester United’s next star. Manchester United graduate Danny Webber said: “Gomes is still very small, but he sees the game seconds before others. Angel is like Paul Scholes; he can dictate a game with his intelligence.” Manchester United would love for Gomes to put pen to paper and sign a new contract to allow him to earn his place in a competitive midfield and join fellow academy players Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams who have both been given considerably more appearances in the first team and Gomes is desperate to follow suit.
I personally think Angel Gomes would be an asset to the squad and team and should be encouraged to sign a new contract with the Red Devils. Even though manager Solskjaer has expressed reservations about Gomes and doesn’t feel he has the physical attributes to shine in the first team just yet. The 19 year old in my opinion, could be an explosive midfield playmaker and his vision and creativity would be a valuable link to the exciting group of young stars who look to rebuild a team to rival the achievements of Fergie Fledglings
