Manchester United vs Southampton Preview

Manchester United returned to winning ways against Real Betis and will look to continue this against Southampton on Sunday. United have still got to make amends for their 7-0 loss to Liverpool and a comprehensive win at Old Trafford will do just that. Southampton just beat Leicester at home but still remain bottom of the league and in a really poor run of form winning three of the last fourteen games. Manchester United should have a lot of confidence and were able to rest some key players after a two goal margin after an hour against Betis. They will hope for a similarly large scoreline. Here’s all you need to know:

Manchester United Team News vs Southampton

Anthony Martial is back in training but remains unable to feature yet. Eriksen and Van de Beek are still out. Marcel Sabitzer missed the game against Betis and it is not clear whether he can return. Lindelof is available and as is Harry Maguire who is likely to start.

Interesting Facts:

  • Manchester United failed to beat Southampton both times last season, drawing 1-1 twice. However, they have already won at St Mary’s this season courtesy of a brilliant volley from Bruno Fernandes.
  • Manchester United have not failed to score against Southampton since December 2017 scoring 23 goals in 11 games since then. Including a 9-0 win in 2021.
  • Marcus Rashford has 35 goal contributions this season and is one away from equalling his highest tally of 36 in 2020/21 (21 goals and 15 assists).

Predicted XI:

I expect David de Gea to continue in goal despite causing problems for his own team. Wan-Bissaka needs to start this one along with Maguire for rotation but Martinez and Shaw should continue.

Casemiro won’t be rested and neither will Fred or Fernandes who has to be in midfield. Rashford should continue on the left with Weghorst up front after finally scoring at Old Trafford. Pellistri played very well on the right when he came on but after a bright appearance from Antony, I expect he will start.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Fred; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Weghorst

Predicted Score:

Southampton are in a hole at the moment and in serious trouble if they can’t start getting results. As long as United stay focused and keep their structure, they will cause Southampton problems and score goals. I expect a big result for United at Old Trafford again.

United to win 3-1
