Manchester United look to overtake Chelsea for the second gameweek in a row as they host West Ham in their fifth home game in their last six. Following Chelsea’s 4-1 loss to Brighton, United can move to fifth and level on points with Newcastle with a win over the Hammers with a game in hand on both Newcastle and Spurs. United have to take the chance offered to them and push for the top four spaces.
West Ham have only lost one of their last eight and are on the rise following a slow start to the season. However, they have shown that they can be opened up as long as chances are taken. United have, ironically, demonstrated that they can create chances but failed to take them. A misfortune epitomised in their recent results against Omonia, Newcastle and Chelsea. The question is, will United break the resilient West Ham defence or could David Moyes foil his former employers? Here’s all you need to know:

Manchester United
United are closing in on returns for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Anthony Martial who could make the bench against West Ham. Raphael Varane is guaranteed to be out along with Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams. Donny van de Beek and Harry Maguire made their returns to the team against Sheriff and could feature again on Sunday.
West Ham United
Craig Dawson and Lucas Paqueta are likely absentees for West Ham along with Nayef Aguerd who made is first competitive appearance for West Ham on Thursday. Other than this trio, West Ham are likely to have a fully fit squad.
Interesting Facts:
- Manchester United have won their last four games in a row against West Ham with late winners proving the difference in both matches last season.
- Anthony Martial has 6 goals and 5 assists in 15 matches against West Ham. He only has a better record against Everton (7 goals and 4 assists in 14 matches).
- Marcus Rashford is a single goal away from a century for Manchester United.
Manchester United vs West Ham Predicted XI:
I can see a few changes from the team that faced Sheriff. De Gea will stay in goal but Shaw will return to the lineup despite a very solid performance from Malacia. Lindelof could make way for Maguire who impressed in the second half. Ronaldo could also return to the bench with Sancho starting on the left and Rashford moving up front.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Sancho; Rashford
Predicted Score:
It seems clear that United can and should dominate possession with the same confidence and aggression they did against Spurs, Chelsea and Sheriff. I can also see them testing Fabianski but will they put the ball in the net? I can see them causing problems but a narrow scoreline makes sense for me. Unfortunately, I can’t see this being a walkover unless United are far more ruthless.
