Sheriff Tiraspol vs Manchester United Preview

Manchester United have taken an extended break due to unfortunate circumstances and now face Sheriff Tiraspol in Matchday 2 of the Europa League group stages. After an awful overall game of football between Manchester United and Real Sociedad, in which an equally awful penalty was the difference between the two, United now will want to return to winning ways before the international break. United don’t have a game this weekend and so this will be United’s last game before their huge trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City. Confidence is key in building up to games like this. So a game in which United are heavy favourites for should be the perfect game for this.

Sheriff famously beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu last season. They also top the group after a 3-0 win over Omonia last Thursday. They won’t be pushovers and will give a good battle for Ten Hag’s team. United are likely to put out a full strength team so this should be an exciting game to watch.

Team News:

Sheriff Tiraspol

Sheriff are almost fully fit with just Dumitru Celeadnic out due to COVID-19.

Manchester United

Manchester United are set to be without Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek for the trip to Moldova as all four missed training today. Brandon Williams and Facundo Pellistri are long-term absentees. Axel Tuanzebe has been listed in Ten Hag’s 25 man squad and so could feature in the squads to come. Martin Dubravka was not mentioned with the travelling squad.

Interesting Facts:

  • Sheriff will face Manchester United for the first time in their history and the first time they have faced an English side since 2013/14 against Christian Eriksen’s Spurs.
  • Sheriff are unbeaten in 8 games and have only conceded one goal in that time.
  • Manchester United have scored in every European away game since a 0-0 draw with AZ Alkmaar in October 2019.

Predicted XI:

United will start strong. With Dubravka mysteriously absent we will have to suffer the negative influence of David de Gea between the sticks. I never expected to be hoping Tom Heaton would be our starting goalkeeper. At the back I can see Dalot and Malacia starting along with Martinez and Maguire to allow Varane enough rest ahead of the City game.

In midfield, Scott McTominay should return along with Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen for our current in-form midfield. As the front three, Sancho and Antony should flank Ronaldo who is our only first team striker seemingly available. I really cannot see Ten Hag dropping Ronaldo with neither Rashford nor Martial available.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Malacia; McTominay, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Sancho; Ronaldo

Predicted Score:

United can relentlessly dominate possession with this team and if they can be energetic and dynamic in attack and creative in wide areas – utilising Fernandes and Eriksen through the middle, they could get a hat-full. I am going to be reserved but I think United could win heavily.

United to win 0-2
