Manchester United vs Brentford Player Ratings
Manchester United sit bottom of the league following their 4-0 defeat to Brentford. The Bees were rampant in the first half and had scored four times inside the first 35 minutes. Ten Hag’s men made numerous shambolic mistakes and were deservedly behind.
Josh Dasilva put the hosts in front early on. Dasilva’s long range effort somehow found it’s way into the net, with David de Gea making yet another error. Mathias Jensen made it 2-0 after capitalising on another defensive error from the visitors.
De Gea gave Eriksen the ball in an awful position and Jensen dispossessed the Dane and put the ball into the empty net. Thomas Frank’s side were relentless, while the Reds looked devoid of confidence and belief. New signing Ben Mee got the third, towering above Lisandro Martinez and scrambling the ball past de Gea.
Bryan Mbeumo got the fourth after being found by his strike partner Ivan Toney. United’s fullbacks were nowhere to be seen and Brentford had their fourth of the evening. The Red Devils didn’t respond and now sit rock bottom of the Premier League.
Manchester United vs Brentford Player Ratings
David de Gea 1/10
At fault for the first two goals and set the tone for the rest of the match. A disgraceful performance from United’s number one.
Diogo Dalot 3/10
Found Ronaldo a few times in the second half, but was nowhere to be seen for the third goal. Sloppy in possession.
Harry Maguire 2/10
Put his team under pressure with some awful passing. Showed no leadership and was a liability all evening.
Lisandro Martinez 1/10
Bullied by Brentford’s forwards for the entirety of the first half. Rightfully taken off at halftime. Varane will likely replace him next week.
Luke Shaw 1/10
A terrible performance. Couldn’t cope with the rhythm of the game and doesn’t look like he can play in this system. Should not start against Liverpool.
Christian Eriksen 2/10
Deployed as the holding midfielder and this was extremely unsuccessful. Was also at fault for the second goal. Missed a decent opportunity in the second half to get his side a goal back.
Bruno Fernandes 4/10
Anonymous for the majority of the game. Still unable to get to the same levels as before and needs to improve if he wants to maintain a starting role. Didn’t get any service.
Fred 3/10
Got given the nod ahead of McTominay but managed to perform just as bad. The midfield had no balance and Fred’s inability to retain possession didn’t help.
Jadon Sancho 1/10
A pathetic performance from the winger. Awful on and off the ball and really needs to step it up.
Cristiano Ronaldo 5/10
Tried his best to get the team back into the game and spurred two opportunities in the second half. Appears disconnected from the rest of the team.
Marcus Rashford 3/10
Didn’t see much of the ball but was too easy to defend against when he had it. Another player who needs to improve or could be on the bench for the foreseeable future.
Subs
Tyrell Malacia 6/10
Better than Shaw and deserves to start next week.
Raphael Varane 6/10
United’s best defender and player in this game.
Scott McTominay 4/10
Brought some height to the midfield but committed unnecessary fouls.
Anthony Elanga 4/10
Didn’t impact proceedings.
Donny van de Beek N/A
Insufficient time on the pitch to make an impact.
Manager Erik ten Hag 4/10
A lack of signings has put ten Hag in a shambolic position. The Reds urgently need signings before the Liverpool game to avoid a repeat of last seasons results. The United boss doesn’t have the players who can play the way he wants. The morale of the current squad is low and a morale boosting signing is needed. The decision to play Martinez at centre back was ten Hag’s only questionable decision.
