With Erling Haaland’s release clause set to kick in from 2022, reports have emerged that Manchester United have made him their number one target. The Norwegian striker has a release clause in the region of €75-100m. United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, knows the 21-year-old striker from his time at Molde. It had been reported that Erling Haaland preferred a move to The Reds before choosing Dortmund. United were unwilling to agree to the release clause inserted within his contract. The German club could also offer him guaranteed playing time. Haaland has scored 62 goals in 61 games for Dortmund, becoming the quickest player to score 20 Champions League goals. Ole Gunnar Solskjær will be keen on bringing the forward to Old Trafford next summer.
United’s current attacking options
Currently, Manchester United’s forward department is heavily stacked. However, Edinson Cavani is expected to leave the club next summer with the Uruguayan’s contract set to expire. There has also been talks of a potential move away for Anthony Martial. These two departures would free up a space in Solskjær’s squad for a striker. United believe they have the resources to win the race for Haaland. Solskjær and sporting director, John Murtough, are in agreement that Haaland must be the number one target for next summer.
What could Erling Haaland bring to United?
In simple terms, goals. The Norwegian’s record speaks for itself. Some see Haaland as a ‘modern day old-fashioned striker.’ Quick, good in the air, powerful and unbelievable hold-up play. Haaland offers a lot more than most centre forwards in football right now. A prolific goal scorer, prepared to score the ‘ugly’ goals. Apart from Edinson Cavani, this isn’t something United fans have seen. The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo may also change that. Typically, a player of Haaland’s ability is one who United would pay-up for. One key factor in any possible deal would be Mino Raiola. A man who United and Solskjær don’t really share a great relationship with.
