England came agonisingly close to their first trophy in 55 years, as they were suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak against Italy. Luke Shaw’s early opener was cancelled out in the second half by Bonucci and the match went the full length. The player ratings are as follows:
Italy Ratings
Gianlugia Donnarumma – 7
The AC Milan keeper was named player of the tournament and showed his worth in the final. Wasn’t at fault for Shaw’s goal and wasn’t really tested throughout the during the 120 minutes. He was Italy’s hero, keeping out penalties from Sancho and Saka, to win them the Championship.
Giovanni Di Lorenzi – 6
A decent performance from the right-back but perhaps guilty of not being aware of Shaw being free at the back post for the opener
Leonardo Bonucci – 8
A very strong performance from the experienced centre back, which was completed with a vital goal for the Italians
Giorgio Chiellini – 8
Age is clearly just a number for this Italian legend as he put in a superb performance, winning more aerials than anyone else
Emerson – 6
Struggled to meet up to the standards of the injured Spinazzolla, whom he replaced, but found himself in the final third a few times, with not much end product.
Jorginho – 7
Helped dictate the game for Italy, seeing plenty of the ball in midfield. Missed the opportunity to score the winning penalty but of course this didn’t matter in the grand scheme of the game.
Marco Veratti – 7
Another strong performance from Veratti, as he helped to dictate the game, allowing Italy to dominate position
Nicolo Barella – 5
Subbed off early in the second half after getting a yellow card and not making much of an impact from the time he was on the field.
Lorenzo Insigne – 6
Attempted more shots than anyone else, but all-in-all didn’t cause too much danger to the English defence
Ciro Immobile – 5
Struggled to get into the game and didn’t offer much of to Italy’s attack.
Federico Chiesa – 8
Italy’s bright spark, constantly providing a threat to England’s defence, with his dribbling and trickery.
England Ratings
Jordan Pickford – 8
Pickford has shown why he was England’s number one throughout the tournament and put in an excellent performance. He did well to stop Veratti’s header but couldn’t do anything to keep out Bonucci’s equaliser. Also kept out Belotti and Jorginho’s penalty.
Kyle Walker – 6
Strong presence at the back and helped contain Insigne and Emerson on Italy’s left.
John Stones – 7
A solid defensive performance and did well in helping England transition out of defence.
Harry Maguire – 8
A commanding presence at the back alongside Stones, didn’t give Italy much of a sniff throughout the game. Scored an excellent penalty as well in the shootout.
Luke Shaw – 7
Finished brilliantly early on and was sound at the back. However didn’t see much of him attacking down the left after the goal.
Kieran Trippier – 6
Set up Shaw’s goal well at the beginning of the game but was relatively quiet afterwards
Declan Rice – 8
One of England’s best performers with winning many duels in the middle of the pitch. Also saw more of an attacking side to his performance, with several take-ons.
Kalvin Phillips – 6
Pressed well off the ball, but would have liked to see more his ability on the ball in the final.
Raheem Sterling – 6
Showed good dribbling ability on the ball, but often couldn’t get the final pass or shot off. Didn’t test Italy’s ageing centre back partnership with his pace enough
Mason Mount – 5
Struggled to make much of an impact going forward but showed plenty of energy in pressing.
Harry Kane – 5
Found himself dropping deep into the pitch too much, struggling to create chances and threaten Italy’s goal.
Man of the Match
Leonardo Bonucci put in an excellent all-round performance, keeping England’s attack at bay and scoring the equaliser as well as a penalty in the shootout.
